Myanmar has launched a strategic plan on the development of rice production in Nay Pyi Taw in a bid to boost agricultural sector, official media reported Thursday.
The strategic plan, launched on Wednesday, is aimed at developing 7.7 million hectares for paddy cultivation, 9.9 million tons for domestic consumption and 6 million tons for export in 2030 with a yield of 4.1 tons per hectare.
According to the Myanmar Rice Federation, the country exported 1.8 million tons of rice in fiscal year 2014-15, up 50 percent from 1.2 million tons in 2013-14 and 28.5 percent from 1.4 million tons in 2012-13.
The country estimated its rice export to hit 2 million tons in 2015-16, expecting to become one of the world’s top three rice exporters in the next few years.
