UNB, Dhaka :
Reiterating that Myanmar has to find a solution to the protracted Rohingya crisis, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said her government is committed to taking steps for sending back the forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens to their homeland safely and respectfully.
“The Rohingya crisis started in Myanmar. So, Myanmar has to find a solution. To this end, we’re committed to taking steps to send back the forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens to their homeland,” she said.
The Prime Minister said this while responding to a question from Selina Jahan Lite (Women Seat-1) during PM’s question-answer session in Parliament.
She said the government has started bilateral discussions with Myanmar. “The Home Minister has already visited Myanmar while the Foreign Minister is there now. “He’ll discuss this issue [with Myanmar authorities],” she said.
The Prime Minister said world leaders are playing a special role in mounting pressure on Myanmar and they have stood beside Bangladesh on this issue.
Hasina said some 6.24 lakh Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh as of October 28 amid persecution by Myanmar military since August 25. “Besides, some four lakh Rohingyas have long been staying in Bangladesh, raising their total number to more than 10 lakh.”
The PM said the government started the process for biometric registration of the Rohingyas on September 11. The registration works are going on in 96 workstations of seven centres of Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas in Cox’s Bazar, she added.
Hasina said the registration of 5,99,460 Rohingyas has been completed as of November 20 last. The Department of Passport, Army, Border Guard Bangladesh and Ansar are engaged in the registration process.
“The Registration of 11,000 Rohingyas is being completed each day and this process will be completed on December 12,” she told House.
Replying to another question from Muhammad Mizanur Rahman (Khulna-2), the Prime Minister said the killing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar is the worst in the world.
She mentioned that Bangladesh always believes in the peaceful solution to any problem. “We’re continuing our strong diplomatic efforts to find a permanent solution to this problem.”
