Drug smuggling rampant: Myanmar citizens carrying Yaba into BD

Smuggling of contraband yaba tablet, a drug containing morphine and amphetamine, is now going apparently unabated in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar region. The situation has turned worse even after the various law enforcing agencies including elite force Rapid Action Batalion (RAB), police and Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) have taken steps to stop the smuggling of yaba and other drugs recently. The law enforcers are conducting special raids to nab the yaba smugglers in the region on regular basis.
A RAB team conducted a three hours long drive at a drug den in DC Road of Chalk Bazar in the port city on Thursday night. The team recovered 64 kilograms of Ganjas and 24 bottles of phynsidil syrup from the drug den. The team also arrested drug trader Mohammed Habib Ullah Jahed from the spot. RAB officials said they recovered drugs worth around taka 9 lakh.
On the other hand, a team of Narcotic Department recovered 2,500 pieces of yaba tablet from two Myanmar citizens who came to Bangladesh just one week ago. The arrestees are identified as Mohammed Kamal (22) and Nur Kamal (18).
Sources said Kamal and Nur Kamal came to Bangladesh in last week and attached with Balukhali Rohingya camp. But, they came out from the camps in association with some other Rohingyas who entered Bangladesh earlier and got involved with yaba smuggling within one week.
A case has been filed with Bakolia thana in this connection. Earlier, on September 27 last, RAB recovered eight lakh pieces of yaba tablet and arrested four yaba smugglers, who are also Myanmar citizens, from a fishing boat on the Bay of Bengal. Commanding Officer (CO) of RAB-7 Lt Colonel Miftah Uddin said “Acting on secret information, a team of RAB recovered 8 lakh pieces of yaba tablet and arrested the four yaba smugglers from a fishing trawler on the Bay of Bengal.”
According to sources, several lakh Rohingya people are making crisis in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Banderban recently. The law and order and environment are severely hampered in Cox’s Bazar and Banderban districts due to the Rohingya people.
The Rohingyas are involved with arms smuggling, trading of yaba and other drugs and underground political activities here in Bangladesh, the law enforcing agencies and district administration officials said. Sources said, on September 23 last, police recovered 10,000 pieces of Yaba tablet from two Yaba smugglers from M rahman community centre area at Toll Plaza of shah Amanat Bridge under Karnaphuli thana in the port city. The arrested are identified as Ariful Hak (25), and Abbas uddin (27).
They hailed from Satkania upazila in Chittagong. The arrested said to the police that he used to carry Yaba tablet in their bags and sell the Yaba in Chittagong city and Dhaka. Besides, police recovered 2,000 pieces of yaba tablet from two yaba smuggler from Natunpara area under Baizid thana in the port city on August 4 last. The team of police arrested the said yaba smugglers from the spot when they were selling yaba among some youths. The arrested were identified as Sayedur Rahman (25), son of Abdul Hakim of Rajachara area of Cox’s Bazar and Mohabbat Islam alias Mishu (25), son of Tajul Islam of Harishpur village at Shandwip upazila in Chittagong.
Narcotic Department recovered 6300 pieces of Yaba tablet from two yaba smugglers from Sadarghat area in the port city on July 30 last. The arrested are identified as Imam Hossain (45), son of Ullah Meah of Samitirpara of Cox’s Bazar sadar and Omar Faruk (22), son of Jalal Majhi of Chunoti under Lohagara upazila in Chittagong.
On July 10 last, Narcotic Department recovered 2500 pieces of Yaba tablet from the Yaba smuggler who is the citizen of Myanmar from Shah Amanat Bridghe area in the port city. The arrested is identified as Nur Mohammed of Tanarchar of Mongdu in Myanmar.
