WHILE issuing an official statement day before yesterday, Myanmar’s army chief denied to have committed rape or any other form of sexual abuses during a crackdown he ordered on Rohingya Muslims on August last year.
Our point, whatever he had ordered, by now, it is known to almost all. His admission of a fact or rejection has little value. Google images, first hand verbal accounts, authentic photographs published so far clear the colossal level of atrocities committed by the Myanmar armed forces on helpless Rohingyas. Actually, his statement comes at a time when it bears no credibility at all. Furthermore, in his statement he mentioned that ‘The Tatmadaw (Myanmar army) is always disciplined and takes action against anyone who breaks the law.’
Our question involuntarily arises – which ‘law’ did more than a million Rohingya refugees break in this regard that they were forced to flee and take shelter in Bangladesh? Can he answer that? Following the Myanmar army chief’s remark, once more it gets confirmed, how hell-bent the country is to defy and deny all its atrocities executed over the helpless Muslim minority! The Myanmar army chief also reiterated that Myanmar was ready to take back the refugees who could be verified as residents as per repatriation deal with Bangladesh. Strangely enough, the Myanmar army chief sounds strikingly similar to the statements of the late General Yahya Khan during our Liberation War. When acclaimed news reporters from globally renowned media houses interviewed him about the mass killings taking place in former East Pakistan he did the same – denied and rejected all accusations. Now, calling the refugees ‘Bengalis’- official shorthand for illegal immigrants from over the border – Senior General Min Aung Hlaing blamed ‘terrorists’ for causing violence last August. Once more, we are compelled to ask, who are those terrorists? Were they arrested or not?
The fact is that, Myanmar’s top-brass of the military is lying, the world comprehends it clearly. Most importantly, the ultimate truth becomes clearer — Myanmar is still under the clutches of its age-old destructive military rule.

Myanmar has been such a beautiful and kindly country and the world has seen how inhumanly uncivilised the country it has been transformed over many years of brutalities of army rule. The army chief has ceased to be even god fearing. The barbarism unleashed by the Myanmar army will not be forgiven. We shall wait for the day when Myanmar will get rid of such army generals who do not feel sorry for rapes and killings done on their helpless people. There is no bravery left among such generals, they are just a brute force unfit for civilised world.
