BSS, Panchagarh :
Cultivation of mustard is increasing in the district every year as farmers are able to earn good profit from the crop.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said a total of 1,629 hectares of land have been brought under mustard cultivation in the district this year.
Mustard can be cultivated easily on the same land after harvesting Aman and IRRI Boro paddy. As a result, farmers are benefited and they become eager to cultivate mustard in their lands, DAE sources said.
Subash Chandra, a farmer of Sobuspara village under Debiganj upazila of the district told BSS that at least six maunds of mustard can be harvested from one bigha of land. Each maund is sold at minimum Taka 2,000 while they have to spend only Taka 3,000 for mustard production on the same land.
The cost of production of the crop is less compared to other crops. Around Taka 9,000 to 10,000 can be earned from one bigha of land by cultivating mustard, he added.
Deputy Director of DAE M Asraf Ali said four varieties of mustard — Tori-7, Bari-9, Bari-R and Bari 14 — are being cultivated in the district during the current season.
At least eight to ten maunds of mustard can be produced from one bigha of land if the crop is cultivated in a scientific way, he added.
