BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that writer Mushtaq Ahmed was tortured to death in jail.
“Those who are trying to express their opinions freely in the media are facing a terrible suffering. Either they have to become the victim of disappearance or to die in government custody. Mushtaq is the latest ruthless victim of it. Originally, Mushtaq Ahmed was brutally tortured to death in prison,” said Fakhrul in a statement on Friday.
He continued saying, “Mushtaq was not a looter or a black marketer, a terrorist or a robber. Mushtaq Ahmed, a meritorious student of Faujdarhat Cadet College, turned off his life lamp prematurely while trying to ensure freedom of thought through social media.”
The young society of the country will wake up and good governance and rule of law will return to the country along with freedom of expression and civil liberties through this fearless self-sacrifice of Mushtaq, Fakhrul added.
Commenting that a suffocating environment is prevailing in the country due to lack of law and order and fair judicial system in the country, the BNP secretary general said, “There is no security for human life and property. Heavy misfortune has befallen on the whole nation. The neo-Baksal rule has been continued in the country so that no one can say a word.”
“In order to silence the people, disappearance, murder, crossfire and death in police custody have been made a part of state life. They are also intimidated by true criticism against the government,” he added.
Fakhrul further said, “All organs of the state have been transferred into Awami League offices. All the features of a brutal one-party authoritarian regime have now come to light. The state has gradually taken the form of mafia.”
