Italian citizen gunned down while jogging in the evening: Police say 'its pre-planned', scrutinizing CCTV footage to nab killers

Staff Reporter :Unidentified miscreants gunned down a foreign national in the city’s Gulshan diplomatic zone on Monday evening.The victim was identified as Tavella Cesare, 50, an Italian citizen, who had been working at the Dhaka office of ICCO [Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation], a Dutch-based NGO, as its Technical Director. “The victim received fatal injuries in different parts of the body including abdomen, back and elbow, when three miscreants riding a motorbike shot him from close range at road no-90 of Gulshan-2 at about 7:30pm,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Gulshan Zone Abdul Ahad told The New Nation last night. “He was rushed to the United Hospital in a critical condition where the doctors declared him dead. The victim was in jogging dress. So far we presume, it’s a pre-planned murder,” the ADC said.Police, however, could not ascertain the motive behind the killing of a foreigner in the city’s diplomatic zone. They also could not nab any one in connection with the incident till the time of filing this report at 9:30 pm yesterday.Officials of different law enforcing agencies, including CID Crime Scene Unit, Detective and Criminal Intelligence Division, Rapid Action Battalion and intelligence units visited the place of occurrence soon after the murder. Police sources said different teams of law enforcement agencies have started massive hunt to unearth the mystery behind the killing of a foreigner. At present, the investigators are giving high importance on the CCTV footage for getting vital clue of the incident. Apart from private installments, more than one hundred CCTVs had been installed by the police to cover the diplomatic zone, the sources said. Officer-in- Charge of Gulshan Police Station said they have identified several marks of bullet injuries in the victim’s body. “The body has been kept in the hospital mortuary and it would be sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy,” the OC said.Earlier in 2012, an official of the Saudi embassy in Dhaka was shot dead in Gulshan area when he came out of his house for jogging.
