Abu Taher (38), an accused in at least 10 cases including murder and robbery, killed Shahjahan Sejan (22) on August 16 after being released on bail from jail three months ago.
According to CID sources, Taher is a professional criminal who killed tourist police constable Parvez in 2015 as he was preventing a robbery.
On August 16, Abu Taher killed Juvraj Shahjahan Sejan (22), son of Nur Mohammad, a local councilor of Ward 11 of Cox’s Bazar Municipality, on the premises of Cox’s Bazar Buddhist Monastery over dispute on drug dealing.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police arrested Abu Taher from the Tentuljhora area of Savar on Tuesday.
CID Special Superintendent of Police Mukta Dhar said this at a press conference in the CID headquarters in Malibagh.
He said Shahjahan Sejan, son of Nur Mohammad, Councilor of Ward no. 11 of Cox’s Bazar municipality, was brutally murdered on August 16 morning
at 10 am. During the altercation over drug dealing, Abu Taher stabbed Shahjahan Sejan to death on the Buddhist monastery in Cox’s Bazar.
The victim’s family filed a murder case with Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station on August 18. The CID initially learned that the killings had connection to drug trafficking and drug use.
The Special Superintendent of Police of CID said that Abu Taher, the main accused in the Sejan murder case, is also the accused in 10 cases including three murder, robbery and drug cases.
Earlier, Abu Taher was stopped by tourist police constable Parvez Hossain while fleeing after a robbery on July 23, 2015. He then stabbed Constable Parvez.
Abu Taher was released on bail three months ago. He added that accused Abu Taher had pleaded guilty to murder during preliminary interrogation.
The operation to arrest the other accused involved in the murder is continuing, CID official added.
