UNB, Dhaka: An accused in a murder case was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at a TT Para slum in the city’s Shahjahanpur area early Sunday. The deceased was identified as Mobarok Ullah Monti,44. Rab-3 commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Khandakar Golam Sarwar said on a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive in the area to arrest Monti at about 3:00 am. Sensing the presence of the Rab members, Monti and his associates who where staying in the area beforehand opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to fire back, triggering a gunfight. Monti was caught in the line of fire and injured while his associates managed to flee the scene. Later, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead. The elite force recovered one foreign-made pistol, one magazine and two rounds of bullet from the scene. Monti was wanted in several cases, including for the murder of Sumi Akter whose seven dismembered body parts were found in the city’s Motijheel area on March 10, Lt Col Sarwar added.
