Multiple vegetables cultivation in single land to make more profit gets momentum in various villages of Raiganj upazila in Sirajganj. Local farmers are choosing eggplant, radish, cauliflower, pepper, maize, pumpkin etc. as the main crops for cultivation.
Abdul Latif, a farmer who cultivated radish in one bigha. Besides radish, he also planted cauliflower and maize in the same land. Even though two types of vegetables are cultivated in single land together, the production is satisfactory as he gets bumper yield of cauliflower and radish. Apart from Latif, Faridul and Mintu, farmers from Ghurka village including Amzad Sheikh of Jainnpur village of the upazila were also cultivating multiple crops on the same land.
Amzad, a farmer of Jainpur village said, “Eggplant is more profitable than other vegetables. Although it costs Tk 20 to 25 thousand per Bigha, the production covers 60/70 mounds of eggplant. At present, the wholesale market price of eggplant is 800-1000 taka per mound. But cultivating peeper with eggplant earns extra income”.
He also said, “If peeper is planted in the gap space of eggplant, it will produce 6-7 mound peepers per bigha whose market value is at least ten thousand taka.”
Besides eggplant and peeper, local farmers are simultaneously cultivating cauliflower with radish, pepper with potatoes, cabbage, couch leaf and coriander leaves to earn more profits. On the other hand, beans or lobes are also being cultivated in potato fields making temporary platform with bamboo.
On roving it is seen that, farmers have also leaned on cultivating multiple vegetables simultaneously in Jagatganti, Bagbati, Ratnakandi and many other areas of Sadar upazila. As it is a risk free method of cultivation that ensures profit, it is gaining momentum among the local farmers in the area.
Faridul Islam, a farmer in Jainpur said, “I cultivated cauliflower first in 5 bighas out of 17 bighas of my total land and I earned doubled profit selling them at the beginning of the season. Moreover, as a turn of farming, I also cultivated eggplant-pepper, potatoes, and sweet pumpkin following the same method.
