The doctors at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Tuesday conducted the second surgery on the right hand of Muktamoni, the 12-year-old girl hailing from Satkhira.
Muktamoni has undergone a successful surgery and she is doing well, said Samanta Lal Sen, National Coordinator of DMCH’s Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit.
During the 45-minute operation at the DMCH burn unit, doctors removed tumour from her upper arm and shoulder, Dr Sen said. “She may have to go through more surgeries,” he said.
More patients suffering from rare medical conditions are coming to the hospital following the successful surgeries of Muktamoni and Abul Bajandar, Dr Sen also said.
The physicians took the decision to conduct the surgery after a second biopsy found the existence of tumor in blood vessels on Muktamoni’s right arm on August 18.
Muktamoni is afflicted by a disease mainly in her right hand, a condition leading to her hand swelling up like a bee hive. On August 12, doctors removed a three-kilogramme tumour from her abnormally swelled right arm in the first surgery.
Muktamoni may need to stay at the DMCH six months more for further surgery. She was admitted to the hospital on July 11.
A 13-member medical board was formed to look into the girl’s case and on August 8 they decided to operate after a biopsy showed a tumour in the artery of her hand.
