State Minister for labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu today put emphasis on developing the existing relations between owners and labourers to push the readymade garments sector ahead.
“Owners should keep in mind that the relations between owner and labourers are reciprocal. Existence of owners would be no more without labourers. So, there is no other way of developing relations of both the parties to protect the RMG industry,” he said while inaugurating a workshop at BGMEA headquarters in the city.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) organized the workshop on gender equity of RMG workers in association with UNFPA and Ministry of Labour. A total of 40 RMG factory owners in Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chittagong were present at the workshop.
The minister stressed for further development of work environment in the factory to turn the sector as a sustainable industry.
Mentioning 80 per cent of the total RMG workers are females, Mujubul opined building awareness among the labourers on gender equity is necessary towards the development of work environment.
“The government is providing all kinds of assistances for the development of work environment . . . you (factory owners) develop and ensure work atmosphere. Safe work environment in factory has to be ensured to turn the sector more sustainable,” added the state minister.
Argentina Matavel Piccin, UNFPA Representative, said if the work environment is developed, production in the sector would be boosted.
She advocated for the elimination of mental harassment of female workers in the work place.
BGMEA President Atikul Islam said the female workers in RMG sector has been empowered now than any other time. The work environment of RMG factory has been development more, he added.
Dr Julia Ahmed made keynote presentation where she described the overall scenario of female workers.
