A senior BNP leader has criticised Finance Minister AMA Muhith’s comments on the top court’s decision that declared the 16th constitutional amendment illegal.
“A very senior cabinet member has said they will pass the 16th amendment again and again. This is horrifying,” said BNP leader Moudud Ahmed.
It’s clear from the remarks that the Awami League government does not believe in the independence of the judiciary, Ahmed said at a discussion on Saturday.
“We never engage in conspiracy against others. But we become victim of conspiracies always. Still conspiracy is on,” said Quader, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League.
Noting that now civility has disappeared from the country’s politics, he said, “There’re only courtesy posters in politics, but courteousness has lost and it is the reality of our country.”
About Sheikh Kamal, the minister said he was inspiring, encouraging and a talented person. “He had no ‘Hawa Bhaban’. No one is there of his contemporary who can be compared with him. He can be compared with only himself.”
Regarding section 57 of the ICT Act, Quader said the misuse of the section 57 over trivial matters has to be stopped. “The tendency of using the section 57 over trifling matters is suicidal and we must stop it.”
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Sociologist Habibul Haque Khondoker and Jatiya Press Club President Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman, among others, spoke at the programme presided over by noted journalist Abed Khan.
Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was born on August 5, 1949, and was assassinated along with most of his family members by a cable of army men on August 15, 1975.
