UNB, Dhaka :
Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Monday underscored the need for a coordinated border management to prevent the free movement of militants and smuggling of goods into the country.
“We want a coordinated border management so that people get relief from militancy on one hand and illegal imports from India on the other,” he said.
Muhith was addressing a discussion titled ‘Coordinated Border Management: An Inclusive
Approach For Stakeholder’, marking the International Customs Day 2015.
Held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital, the discussion was organised by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Terming the current terrorism a big issue, the Finance Minister said the cross-border security over the country will have to be controlled with strict vigilance.
Referring to customs officials’ duties, Muhith said once their job was limited to revenue collection only, but now it has changed in many ways with the growing business in the country.
The Finance Minister criticized the current BNP-led 20-party alliance’ s indefinite nationwide transport blockade as it triggered violence with arson attacks on people and said the movement has taken a perilous shape.
“This (violence) has been unleashed just out of vengeance. It can no way be considered as a movement or activity of an opposition political force that has unleashed terror in the country killing people. All this has to be addressed,” he said.
Muhith, however, said, “I hope good sense will prevail upon leaders of the opposition force in this regard.”
Speaking on the occasion, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said some political parties have been trying to turn Bangladesh into a failed state like Pakistan through acts of sabotage in the name of so-called movement, but they will never be successful.
Tofail urged the customs officials to contribute towards creating business-friendly atmosphere so that the country can march towards progress by boosting business and attracting foreign investment.
