Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Sunday asked the bankers to be more cautious as the flow of money supply is likely to increase in 2018 because of the national election.
“Flow of money supply, including black money, is likely to increase for election purpose. So, we will have to be cautious in conducting banking activities,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at the “Rupali Bank Annual Business Conference-2018” at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan, Financial Institutions Division Senior Secretary M Eunusur Rahman and Rupali Bank Chairman Monzur Hossain also spoke on the occasion. Rupali Bank Managing Director M Ataur Rahman Prodhan presided over the function.
Muhith said the government and regulatory bodies are working for bringing down the Non-Performing Loan (NPL) to a tolerable level and the situation is gradually improving.
“As our economy is doing well, the performance of banking sector is also well. Everyone accepts that the Bangladesh economy is developing. There is also a contribution of banking sector to the development of economy,” he added.
He underscored the need for controlling credit disbursements of banks as several banks have already crossed their limits of the Advance Deposit Ratio (ADR).
“Several banks have crossed their normal norms of ADR. We will have to control it. Bangladesh Bank observes it,” he added.
Muhith said the government will maintain the capital adequacy provision in the next national budget to protect the banking sector from crisis.
“We cannot allow any disruption in the banking sector. If any bank faces disruption, it will have impacts on the whole economy,” he added.
The finance minister asked the bankers to work for developing the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) as about 75 percent industrial production comes from the SME sector.
“The rate of credit recovery in SME sector is good. The sector also creates huge opportunities for employment generation,” he added.
MA Mannan said the government is working relentlessly to develop the banking sector through providing all sorts of policy supports. The government is providing special focus on NPL for bringing it to a tolerable level, he added.
Eunusur Rahman asked the officials of the state-run banks to work for increasing the confidence of the common people in the banking sector through providing standard services to their clients.
He said the banking sector is performing well in all areas, including deposit, loan, export, import and remittance.
