A Dhaka court placed Mufti Kazi Ibrahim, a preacher known for his controversial speeches, on a two-day remand in a case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station under Digital Security Act on Wednesday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufiana Noman passed the order after police had produced him in the court, seeking a 10-day remand.
Defence lawyer Abdur Razzak said during the remand hearing, “Mufti Ibrahim is an Islamic scholar. He is not involved with any politics. He always speaks in light of the Qur’an and the Hadith.
He did not say anything provocative against the state and the government. The case has been filed against Ibrahim for harassment only.
He had been kept in DB custody after arrest for interrogation. So there is no logic for remand, lawyer Abdur Razzak further said.
On Wednesday afternoon, an official of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station.
Another case was lodged against him by a man named ZM Rana on Tuesday night accusing him of committing fraud.
Earlier, a team of detectives detained the Islamic speaker from his residence on Zakir Hossain Road at Lalmatia in the capital early Monday.
The detention decision was taken after controversy grew over the speeches he delivered at different waz-mahfil, and social media like Facebook and YouTube.
