Gun attack on Bogra Shia Mosque: Muazzin killed, Imam among 3 injured

Staff Reporter :At least one person was killed and three others sustained bullet injuries when unknown gunmen opened fire on devotees at a Shia mosque at Shibganj upazila in Bogra on Thursday.The deceased was identified as Moazzem Hossain, 70, the Muazzin of the mosque. Shahinur Islam, 35, Imam of the mosque, also received bullet wounds in the incident. Moazzem Hossain succumbed to his bullet wounds at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital this evening, said Dr SM Zahidul Islam of the hospital’s emergency unit.The other injured are Abu Taher, 70, and Aftab Ali, 42, reports our Bogra correspondent.The injured were rushed to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex from where Moazzem, Taher and Shahinur were shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital at 7:00pm.According to the emergency unit doctor, Taher’s condition is also critical.According to police and witnesses, a group of three youths entered the Al Mustafa Shia mosque of Haripur village at Shibganj upazila when around 40 people were offering their Maghrib (evening) prayers.After entering the mosque, the attackers first locked the main gate of the mosque and then opened fire targeting the devotees leaving four of them critically injured.The miscreants fled from the scene immediately after the shooting.The injured people were rushed to the upazila health complex first and later Taher and Shahinur were shifted to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared Muazzin Moazzem Hossain dead.Police rushed the mosque on information and cordoned it. They also recovered shells of bullet from the spot. “A gang of unidentified miscreants entered the mosque and opened fire indiscriminately on the devotees soon after the Magrib prayers leaving four bullet wounds,” Ahsan Habib, Officer in-charge of Shibganj police station, told The New Nation on Thursday while confirming the incident.He said, the injured persons were rushed to local hospital and later Moazzem, Taher and Shahinur shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.”He (Hossain) sustained bullet injuries on his head and the on-duty doctors of the hospital declared him dead when he was taken there,” he added. The OC, however, said that none was arrested in this connection and police were carrying out raids to nab the attackers. High officials of Bogra police also visited the mosque in the night.
