MPs urged to play strong role for people’s welfare to achieve SDGs

Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to play a strong role in ensuring welfare of the people to achieve the SDGs within the stipulated time. “Ensuring welfare of the public will speed up the progress of achieving the SDGs …parliament members must work sincerely to increase their capacity and to establish good governance”, said the Speaker. Dr Shirin made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing as chief guest at a programme titled ‘Brainstorming Session’ on SDGs implementation at the JS Bhaban. The Speaker urged MPs to adopt action plans in their constituencies considering the general welfare of the people, prioritizing development of the country and global development agenda.
“As opportunity to work for the common people has been created and the responsibilities of parliament members have also increased”, Dr Shirin said highlighting the necessity of establishing a SDG cell with parliament members.
Referring to the ‘Constituency Tracker’ as an innovative initiative for achieving SDGs, she said that it would be possible to easily track the progress of constituency-based SDGs, added the release. Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Mia, UNDP Resident Representative Sudipto Mukherjee, UNDP team leader of Asia-Pacific focal point Charles Chauvel, Head of Results Management and Data at the Access to Information (A2i) Ramiz Uddin and grandson of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Consultant of UNDP Redwan Siddiqui Bobby were also present as special guests.

 The programme was presided over by Senior JS Secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan.
Chairmen of Parliamentary Standing Committees were also present, among others, in the programme.
