Shamsur Rahman Sherif, an Awami League lawmaker from Pabna-4 and a former land minister, has died at the age of 79.
He passed away during treatment in Dhaka’s United Hospital at 3:38 am on Thursday, his son Galibur Rahman said.
Shamsur was suffering from various old-old complications and was admitted to the hospital on Mar 11, said United Hospital’s spokeswoman Shagufa Anwar.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh have expressed condolences over the death of the veteran Awami League leader and freedom fighter.
His body is being taken to Pabna by his family, said Shagufa.
Shamsur was born on Mar 12, 1941 in Pabna Sadar Upazila’s Char Shanirdiar village.
He graduated from Edward College and had been actively involved in politics from his student days.
Shamsur was arrested for taking part in the Language Movement as a student of class V and was also involved in the protests against Ayub Khan’s martial law dictatorship, the six-point movement and the mass uprising of 1969.
