A ruling party MP allegedly beat up a journalist in sadar upazila in the district on Thursday. Witnesses said Awami League MP (Sadar constituency) Abdul Odud physically assaulted the district correspondent of Daily Jugantor, Emran Faruq Masum, in front of the Upazila Education Office around 10:30am.
Emran Faruq Masum is also the joint-secretary of the district unit of AL.
The incident took place as Emran went to the Upazila Education Office to collect news over the alleged irregularities of the headmaster of a government primary school.
The assistant director of the Primary and Mass Education Department Debesh Sarker visited the Upazila Education Office to investigate the alleged irregularities in the morning.
Later on, the accused headmaster, accompanied by MP Abdul Odud and his followers, entered the Upazila Education Office where journalists were also present.
Assaulted journalist Emran told UNB that at one stage, MP Abdul Odud and his followers started beating him up in presence of many people including the investigation officer. Local journalists strongly protested the incident and announced to form a human chain on Friday in protest against the incident.
