Veteran freedom fighter, parliament member and former Jatiya Sangsad chief whip Abul Hasnat Abdullah’s wife Shahan Ara Abdullah died in at a city hospital on Sunday night at the age of 72.
Shahan Ara, also mother of Barishal City Corporation Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, breathed her last around
11.30pm on Sunday due to heart related complications while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
Senior vice-president of Barishal district Awami League (AL) and member of central Mahila Awami League Shahan Ara was admitted to the hospital on Friday last after she felt chest pain. Since then, she was undergoing treatment there. Her physical condition was deteriorated on Sunday morning and later, she was shifted to the ICU of the hospital. Shahan Ara is survived by husband, three sons, a daughter as well as a host of relatives and admirers. She was laid to eternal rest at Muslim graveyard in Barishal at 8am on Monday with state honour after being accorded a guard of honor by district administration. Before the burial, her second namaj-e-Janaza was held in Barishal where noted political and cultural personalities of the district attended. Earlier, her first namaj-e-janaza was held on the BSMMU premises at around 1am on Monday. Awami League presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Chhatra League president Al Nahian Joy and a number of central AL leaders, among others, attended her namaj-e-Janaza at that time.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Sahan Ara Begum, wife of Abul Hasnat MP, vice president of Barishal district Awami League and a valiant freedom fighter. She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family. Besides, President Abdul Hamid on Monday expressed profound shock at death of Shahanara Abdullah, the wife of senior Awami League leader Abul Hasanat Abdullah MP and mother of Barishal City Corporation (BCC) Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah. In a condolence message, the President prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
