A Dhaka court on Sunday sent Mosaddek Hanif Swad, owner of Moyur-2launch, to jail in connection with a case filed over the death of 34 people in Buriganga launch capsize on June 29.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahjadi Tahmida passed the order after Sub-inspector Md Shahidul Alam of River Police, also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before her court on completion of three-day remand.
The court also rejected his bail after his lawyer submitted a petition on the ground that his client was not involved in the incident.
In his forwarding report, IO Shahidul Alam said the accused gave important information about the
incident which was being verified. So, he appealed to the court to confine him in jail until the investigation is completed, he added.
On July 9, a team of River Police arrested Swad from a house in Dhanmondi area of Dhaka and later he was placed on a three-day remand in this connection.
Another Dhaka court on July 10 sent Abdus Salam, a supervisor of the launch, to jail on expiry of his three-day remand in the same case.
At least 34 people drowned as a novice was allegedly at the helm of Moyur-2 launch when the vessel slammed into a smaller launch-Morning Bird-causing the smaller vessel to sink in the Buriganga river at the capital’s Shyambazar on June 29.
The following day, Shamsul Alam, a sub-inspector of Sadarghat River Police Station, filed the case with Keraniganj Dakshin Police Station against seven people, including the owner of the Moyur-2-launch.
