The two city corporations will set up 24 makeshift cattle markets in Dhaka city ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) have recently called separate tenders to set up the temporary markets.
Of the total markets, 14 will be set up in the DSCC areas apart from the permanent one at Gabtoli while 10 others in DNCC areas, according to sources at the corporations.
The places in DSCC area are: North Shajahanpur Moitri Sangha playground and its adjoining open spaces, Meradia bazaar and its adjoining open grounds, Armanitola playground and its adjoining open spaces, Gopibagh Balur Mat and open spaces around Kamalapur Stadium, Dania College area open spaces, Dupkhola playground, Dholaikhal Truck Stand, open spaces at Aftabnagar (Eastern Housing) block no. E, F, G and H and section I & II, Ashulia Model Town open space and Rahmatgangj Sporting Club playground and its adjoining areas at Lalbagh in the capital.
The places at DNCC are: unused and abandoned spaces of Bhasantek road and its adjoining areas, open grounds at Vatara area, playground of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, open spaces at Badda Eastern Housing, open spaces of Mohammadpur Police Lines, Mirpur section-6 (open spaces of Eastern Housing), Uttara section-15 and open spaces located on the western part of section-1 bridge in the same area, open spaces at Uttara sector-17 (from Brindabon to BGMEA) and open spaces from Kaola to Sialdanga areas.
Apart from the cattle markets, the DNCC is also considering to set up one more cattle market.
A high official of DSCC estate section told the FF on Thursday that they have called for the tenders on June 14 last.
He said that once the tender process is completed, they will ask the leaseholders, traders and customers to strictly follow the health safety guidelines in the markets to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Another official of DNCC also said they will also ask the leaseholders, traders and customers to strictly follow the government set health safety protocol.
Meanwhile, the ministry of fisheries and livestock (MoFL), like the previous years, will deploy people responsible for caring animal health at the city’s cattle markets to ensure healthy cattle for the customers and traders.
