In an effort to ensure food safety and raise public awareness, the Ministry of Food will give a proposal to the Cabinet to observe the “National Food Safety Day on February 2”.
To discuss the issue, the Ministry recently held a meeting with Food Minister Advocate Kamrul Islam in the chair.
High officials of the concerned government agencies were present at the meeting.
“We have decided to observe the “National Food Safety Day
considering the importance of the food safety issue. The main objective to observe the day is to create public awarenees,” Kamrul Islam told The New Nation on Sunday.
He said, a draft proposal in this regard has already been finalized. As per the proposal, the Ministry has proposed February 2 as the National Food Safety Day.
“The day will be observed countrywide highligthing the critical issues of food safety,” he added.
The Minister further said that the issue will be placed in the next Cabinet meeting for its consent. If we get Cabinet nod, the day will be observed from the next year.
According to the Minister, at present 18 Ministries and 350 agencies are directly and indirectly involved in the process of food production, marketing and prevention of food adulteration. They are conducting food safety activities through taking various programmes without any coordination amongst them.
“The National Food Safety Day will help them to come closer and formulate their strategies with more coordinated way making the government effort to ensure food safety and building public awareness across the country,” he added. The government earlier enacted a law to ensure food safety. The law had been made effective from February 1, 2015.
