Move to demolish 3500 buildings at disaster risk

About 3,500 risky government buildings in capital Dhaka will be demolished soon as they make threat to living or using any purpose.
 A B M Amin Ullah Nuri, Chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) said that the work for annihilating these buildings will start soon. Along with Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), RAJUK will operate a drive to make risk free old Dhaka. Besides, the perpetrators who were involved to build a troubled building will be under law and orders.
Last Thursday, a six-storey building has tilted in Dhaka’s Sutrapur area, leaving the residents of the neighbourhood panicked and putting at risk a four-storey building next to it.
Dhaka South City Corporation has evacuated the residents of the two buildings fearing a collapse.
Locals on Friday said the leaning building styled “Haji Bari, Etotuku Basa” with the holding number 47/2 was constructed in 1995 by filling up a ditch.
Building owner said he had built a six-storey building on one decimal land. Neighbours said that this building was structured without foundation.
According to building code there should have 10 feet space on a face-to-face building whereas in the old town there were only four feet. And in upper level there is only one feet distance from one building to another.
Last Saturday, a fire was broke out at a five-storey building in the capital’s Banani Chairman Bari area. According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters sources, the fire originated at the storehouse-cum-showroom of Amicon on the second floor of the building. 15 firefighting units brought the fire under control after 4 hours.
Most of the buildings in capital Dhaka are at risk as they have breached building code, opined the urban planners. Earthquake like disaster will make devastating situation beyond our imagination. The urban planners urged the RAJUK to be straight of their supervision.
The RAJUK Chairman said work is underway on the list of risky buildings in the capital after the FR Tower accident. As part of this, about 3,500 government buildings will be renovated or demolished first.
