Staff Reporter :
BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Friday accused the Election Commission of being subservient to the Awami League interests by amending the Election Code of Conduct Rules 2016.
“The current Election Commission is now going to amend the election code of conduct with an evil design as part of the government’s conspiracy,” said the BNP leader while addressing a discussion meeting arranged by
Khaleda Zia Mukti Parishad at the national Press Club. The meeting was arranged to voice for the release of Begum Khaleda Zia from jail. “The main motive behind the amendment is to open the campaign window for AL MPs in the city corporation and the next general elections with all the protocols and power,” he said.
“As per the current election code of conduct, MPs have no scope for taking part in election campaign. The commission is now amending it to allow the MPs to do that in the next polls.”
There is no scope to hold a fair and acceptable election in the country under the current EC because it is busy to make the government happy. He also condemned the ongoing anti-narcotics drive, saying the government is killing people unlawfully having failed to control the drug abuse.
He asked the government to take proper steps to stop the drug abuse by enforcing law and to stop all kinds of extrajudicial killing in the country.
