Bangladesh has signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with China on Tuesday for modernizing jute mills with technical assistance from China, said an official release here today.
Under the MoU, China TextMatek Company (CTMC) will undertake balancing, Modernization, Rehabilitation and Expansion (BMRE) work for twenty-six old jute mills under the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC).
Besides, the Chinese government will provide technology support to Bangladesh for producing modern and diversified jute goods at the BJMC jute mills.
The Chinese company will also survey the jute mills with the grant to be provided by the Chinese government before undertaking BMRE work, the press release added.
The MoU was signed by BJMC chairman Major General (retd) Humayun Khaled and CTMC president Mr Jing Chen on behalf of their respective governments. The Chinese government will provide credit to Bangladesh for completing BMRE. The credit is refundable within 20 years with 1.5 per cent interest.
Textile and Jute Minister Muhammad Imajuddin Pramanik, secretary of the Ministry of textile and Jute Phoni Bhusan Chowdhury, Joint secretary (jute) M Shamsul Kibria, among others, were present on the occasion.
