UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Friday alleged that the incidents of repression of women and children have marked a sharp rise at the speed of a storm due to the government’s failure to run the country and for its lack of accountability.
“Tufan Sarkar of Bogra has reflected the government activities. The incidents of rape of women and children are increasing in the country at the speed of a storm,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion programme, he further said there is no difference between the character of the current government and that of Tufan Sarker.
“The incidents of rape of women and children will continue to happen as long as this regime remains in power. Members of Awami families are involved with every incident taken place so far.”
National People’s Party (NPP), a component of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, organised the programme at the Jatiya Press Club.
Terming Bogra incident an incredible one, Moudud said an Awami League leader raped a student and shaved the heads of the victim and her mother in a brutal manner. “Such ferocious incidents are being taken place as the government has no accountability to people,” he said.
The BNP leader also added that the law enforcers are failing to control violence against women and children and maintain the law and order as the government only trains them to ‘suppress’ opposition leaders and activists and harass them in ‘false’ cases.
He opposed the law minister’s comment that the current Chief Justice is trying to take the power of President, saying SK Sinha is only trying to restore the article 116 of the 1972 Constitution.
Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, described the Supreme Court’s verdict that declared the 16th constitutional amendment illegal as a historic one and said it has reflected people’s hopes and aspirations. “We would like to call upon the government to quit immediately accepting the SC verdict.
He alleged that 2016 was a year of repressing the country’s minority community.
Referring to the statistics presented by Bangladesh Hindu Mohajote, he said 98 Hindu people were killed in 2016 while 26 Hindu women were raped and 22 remain missing.
Besides, Moudud alleged that many Hindu idols and temples were vandalised and the assets, homesteads and business institutions of Hindu families grabbed and looted during the period.
