A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and Council of Higher Education (CoHE) of Turkey on Tuesday in Dhaka. Under MoU, seven Bangladeshi students will get PhD scholarship facilities in textile education in Turkish Universities every year. The objectives of the MoU are to exchange academic and scientific activities between the higher educational institutions of both the countries. Prof Abdul Mannan, Chairman, UGC and Prof Dr MA Yekta Sarac, President, Council of Higher Education of Turkey signed the deal on behalf of their respective organizations.
UGC Chairman, in his speech, said that UGC has been relentlessly working for expansion, promotion and internationalization of higher education of the country. “We need cooperation and assistance from other countries for enhancement of quality of tertiary education,” he observed. He further opined that the Memorandum of Understanding would play a vital role for enhancing the quality of higher education in Bangladesh. Besides, the deal will strengthen the bondage of the two friendly countries.
Prof Mannan said that Turkey holds a leading position in Textile sector in the world. Bangladesh is the second largest apparel exporter in the world. “We will learn so many things in Textile education from Turkey,” he added.
In his speech, Prof Yekta Sarac said that the number of students and researchers coming in Turkey and going abroad has shown a significant increase in recent years with various exchange programmes, scholarships and other opportunities. This development is an important step toward internationalization of our higher educational system.
He said that Turkey is the 2nd largest country, which is providing higher education facilities to its students in Europe. “At present, around 7.3 million students are persuing higher education in the country.” He said that the MoU would create a new horizon for enhancing the quality of higher education in the two friendly countries. He also said Turkey is highly pleased for signing agreement on higher education wtih UGC for the first time.

Akhtar Hossain, Prof Dr M Shah Nowaz Ali, Members, UGC, Prof Masud Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor, Bangladesh Textile University and high officials from UGC, among others, were present on the occasion.
