In a sensational incident, a woman and her three daughters were burnt alive as miscreants set their house ablaze while they were asleep at Sohagpara village under Mirzapur upazila on Tuesday, a day after the Eid-ul Azha.
The ill-fated victims were identified as Hasna Begum, 35, her daughters Morium, 18, Mimi, 10, and eight-year-old Moli.
Police suspect the house was set on fire after sprinkling petrol following the spurning of a marriage proposal. Police found two
 petrol containers at the spot.
Superintendent of Police of Tangail Saleh Mohammad Tanvir termed the incident as killing and said that neighbor Jahangir, also an expatriate, had been giving love proposal to Morium since a couple of days.
” The house of one expatriate Majibur Rahman went up in flames as Jahangir was refused by Morium,” the SP said.
Tangail (South)’s Additional Superintendent of Police Pankaj Chandra Roy said,
“After 3am, some miscreants poured petrol on the house through the windows and set it alight. The fire spread quickly and all four were burnt alive.”
Member of Gorai union parishad Abdur Rahim said Jahangir had been proposing to marry Mariam for two months and after the refusal he beaten Mariam and her mother four days ago.
Gorai union parisahd acting chairman Adilur Rahman said locals noticed fire at Mojibur’s house and informed fire service around 4am on Tuesday.
On information, fire service rushed in and doused the fire. Later, they recovered the burnt bodies of four people from the room also recovered two petrol containers from the spot.
Jahangir and his entire family were absconded after the incident.
Begum’s brother Md Mofazzal Hossain filed a case with the Mirzapur Police Station naming ‘Jahangir’ as the prime suspect.
Mirzapur Police Station OC Golam Mustafa said that they had arrested two for their alleged involvement with the incident.
They arrestees were identified as Nasima, aunt of Jahangir and Muhammad Ali, a rickshaw puller of the area, police sources said.
Jahangir’s brother Abu Hanif was also picked up by police from the Upazila’s Baliyazan area Tuesday night. Besides, the police had nabbed one Ali Hossain, a rickshaw-puller, over the incident.
Hossain has confessed that he was paid Tk 200 to fetch two containers of petrol and did deliver them to Jahangir’s house.
