Four persons, including a woman and her son, were allegedly hacked to death reportedly by a ‘mentally derailed person at Radhanagar in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla district on Wednesday.
The victims were identified as Anwara Begum, 45, her son Abu Hanif, 12, Nazma Akter, 36, wife of Nurul Islam, and her mother-in-law Majeda Begum, 55. They are residents of Radhanagar village in the upazila.
Two others also received injured in the attack and they were taken to nearby hospital.
Suspected attacker Mokhlesur Rahman was killed in a mob beating, reports our district Correspondent quoting Debidwar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahirul Anwar.
Azim Ul Ahsan, Additional Superintendent of Police of Cumilla Special Branch (DSB), said, “Mukhlesur, a rickshaw puller by profession, came out of home with rickshaw in the morning. But he returned home after quarrel with an auto-rickshaw driver. Eventually, he again went out of home with chopper following an altercation with his wife. At one stage, Mokhlesur first hacked Abu Hanif when he was working in a paddy field at Radhanagar village around 10:30am, leaving him dead on the scene. Later, he hacked five others when they tried to save Hanif. Among them, three died on the spot and on the way to hospital.” Local people managed to catch Mokhlesur, beat him black and blue, leaving the man dead on the spot, he said.
He was a drug addict and involved in criminal activities, the police official said.
Law enforcers are investing the matter, according to him.
The bodies were sent to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital for autopsies.
