A mother went missing and another woman drowned in Padma River after saving two children on Friday afternoon in Goalanda upazila’s Daulatdia.
The missing woman was identified as Rebecca Khatun, 22, wife of Sujat Sheikh of the area. The deceased was named as Swapna Begum, 32, wife of Chandu Mondol of Daulatdia Natun Para area.
Eyewitnesses said two children – Nirob and Lamia – went missing while bathing in Padma. Nirob’s mother Rebecca jumped into the river and saved the children but was swept away by the current.
Swapna jumped to save Rebecca but she, too, went missing.
Locals later rescued Swapna and took her to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced her dead.
Md Ezaz Shafi, officer-in-charge of Goalanda Ghat Thana, said that Rebecca was still missing.
Goalanda Fire Service Station officer Abdur Rahman said they had to suspend the rescue operation at 8pm due to strong current and hostile weather.
The operation will resume on Saturday, he added.
