A court in Khulna has convicted a woman of murdering her 9-year-old son.
In June 2016, police found the boy’s body wrapped in a sack, which was dumped in the southwestern city’s Kartikkul neighbourhood.
In its verdict, delivered on Tuesday, an additional metropolitan sessions judge sentenced the woman and three others to death and acquitted a fifth.
The death-row convicts are the victim’s mother Sonia Akter, Md Nurunnabi, Md Rasul and Md Hafaizur Rahman.
On the morning of June 9 last year, locals at Kartikkul discovered the body in a ditch and reported to the police. The boy was later identified as 9-year-old Hashmi Mia.
The father started a murder case with the police the same day. According to investigators, Sonia was involved in an extramarital affair with convict Nurunnabi, which was the motive of the killing. The mother confessed to the crime later in court.
In December last year, police pressed charges against seven suspects and the trial kicked off in April this year after the court indicted five.
