A woman and her three children have been found dead inside their home at Dhaka’s Kamarpara.
The body of Rehena Parvin, 40, was found hanging from the ceiling of her tin-roofed hut at Kaliartek on early Friday, police said.
Her children’s bodies were on a bed with nooses around their necks. They are ‘Shanta’, 13, ‘Shefa’, 8 and ‘Saad’, 1.
The four bodies were recovered and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 2am Friday, said Turag Police OC Mahbubey Khoda.
Rehena’s neighbours untied her noose after discovering the bodies, she said. The four bodies were on the floor by the time police arrived.
Her husband Mostafa Kamal began screaming for his neighbours after seeing the bodies when he returned home from a nearby cooperatives office at night.
Police are assuming that Rehena, from Fariganj of Chandpur, killed herself after taking the lives of her children, said OC Mahbub, “But we are checking if there is another reason behind this.”
Police were yet to question the neighbours about any possible dispute between the couple, he said. “We still couldn’t talk to them. Everybody is busy with the bodies in the hospital.”
Kamal said he ate Iftar with his wife and children on Thursday evening. He then went to the office of a cooperative he built with other small businessmen in the neighbourhood.
“When I came back, the light in the front room was switched off. The children’s bodies were on the bed in the middle room and
Rehena’s body was hanging from the ceiling fan.
“I screamed. People came running. I breathed into Rehena’s mouth, but I couldn’t save her.”
He said he did not at first realise that the children were also dead.
Kamal, speaking to bdnews24.com at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the family has been suffering money crisis, which he may have been a motive for her ‘suicide’.
He said he had trouble paying tuition for his daughters’ schooling. ‘Shanta’ studied at the fifth grade and ‘Shefa’ was at the fifth grade of Kamarpara’s Parashmani Laboratory School.
“I used to have a good job at a factory in Chittagong. I have done many things since then including a business selling flats. But I made some losses, so we have been suffering badly.”
Rehena, he said, worried about their finances. “Maybe she did this because of those worries.”
But Rehena’s relatives, who were seated nearby inside the hospital’s emergency wing, gave a different version of their story.
“They’ve been married for 17 years. Her husband’s family never gave her any peace,” said Rozina Sultana, Rehena’s sister.
She claimed Rehena was killed by her mother-in-law, sister-in-law and others in their household.
The house where the couple has been living belonged to Kamal’s father, said Asma Akhtar, daughter of Rehena’s other sister.
The rent paid by residents of the 20 tin huts on the property is collected by Kamal’s mother Mafia Begum and sister Kohinoor.
“They would fight a lot with aunt (Rehena) about the rent. They live next door to her, and even after this they didn’t come to the hospital.”
