Rana Plaza incident: Most victims’ families yet to get compensation

Even after the fours years, the families of many of the Rana Plaza victims who were killed during the tragedy are yet to get any compensation from the authorities concerned due to identification crisis.
The families of some 150 people, who had lost their lives in the Rana Plaza building collapse are counting their days with hopes of getting compensations for the last four years.
On April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, an illegally-constructed building at Savar, housed five garment factories, came down crashing, killing, 1,175 people and injuring over 2,000 others.
According to the survey of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), some 159 workers were still missing and families of those missing people are deprived from getting any compensation.
The survey also revealed that some 513 children of the Rana plaza victims , who were killed during the tragedy, have been rehabilitated in different organisations and of them, 25 orphan children were getting special facilities while most of the children of Rana Plaza victims are hardly getting any conveniences.
CPD sources said, according to the Labour Ministry, the authorities concerned are able to identify 206 bodies by cross-checking the DNA profiles out of 365 bodies. The families of the rest 159 missing people did not receive any compensation yet though four years have elapsed. Sources said, a total of 31 organisations have provided financial support to Rana Plaza Donors Fund and as per the latest information, some 2.15 crore dollar has been deposited to the fund
where there is need of Tk 3 crore dollar.
According to the ILO report, some 2770 people get 40 percent of their payment in five phases from the fund in last year while 30 percent payment of the rest 60 percent was received by the 2,968 affected families on April 8 this year worth Tk 31.2 crore. A total of Tk 75.88 crore of the compensation money has been paid to the affected Rana Plaza victims in six phases though Dutch Bangla Bank and ‘bkash’ accounts.
However, the 4th anniversary of Rana Plaza collapse, the worst-ever tragedy in the country’s multi-billion dollar ready-made garment (RMG) industry will be observed today.
Different rights bodies, workers organisations and left political parties will chalk out various programmes, including discussion, rally and human chain, to mark the day recalling the tragedy.
