Most of the major rivers in the Barishal region have overflowed and crossed the danger level flooding the low-lying areas, crops fields, commercial and residential areas since last 48 hours, confirmed Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Barishal office.
Abdul Kuddus, senior observer of Barishal divisional weather office, informed that total 65 millimeter rainfall was recorded at Barishal city and surrounding areas in last 24-hours till 3:00 PM on Wednesday, September 23, 2020.
BWDB sources said major rivers of Barishal division including Kirtonkhola River of Barishal, Burishawr of Barishal and Patuakhali, Meghna, Tetulia of Daulatkhan in Bhola, Payra of Mirjaganj upazila in Patuakhali, Bishkali of Jhalakathi Barguna and Kacha of Pirojpur are already flowing above danger levels from two to 69 centimeters, said Dipak Das, Executive Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board, Barishal district.
As a result, agriculture lands, villages, ponds, roads and bazaars of the affected areas have been flooded and marooned.
Various low-lying areas have been submerged in tidal water in the lower parts of Bhola including Manpura, Doulatkhan and Charfession, said Hasan Mahamud, Executive Engineer of BWDB, Bhola
Water level in all unions in Monpura and Charfession upazilas of Bhola district are also increasing, BWDB sources confirmed.
In Barishal, most areas of Mehendiganj upazila submerged under 6-12 inches under water and vegetables specially betel leaf garden and paddy fields went under water, confirmed UNO Mehendiganj Upazila Pijush Chandra Dey.
Md. Masum Assistant Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board, Barishal district said the Meghna River is flowing 69 centimeters above the danger lavel at Daulatkhan Point, Nayavanguni River 108 cm above danger level at Abupur point, Payra River at Mirjaganj point 19 cm above danger level, Kacha River at Pirojpur point 8 cm above danger level, Tetulia River at Bhola Kheyghat point 15 cm above danger levels and Bishkhali River at Jhalakathi, Bamna and Patharghata point 9cm, 22cm and 33 cm. respectably above danger levels and Kirtonkhola River 20 cm above danger labels.
Mohammad Masum, Assistant Engineer, Barishal, added that due to strong upstream water pressure and heavy of rain fall, water levels of the rivers have increased and low lands, river banks and many parts of shoals have been marooned by logged water.
