Heavy rainfall of last couple of days has paralyzed lives of the people of Khulna city and nine upazila areas.
Water logging has been created at most of the city areas and the upazila areas have inundated due to heavy rainfall, caused by the depression in the Bay of Bengal.
Incessant rain disrupted the lives of Khulna city dwellers. Water logging created due to torrential rain in the last couple of days. Heavy rainfall submerged most of the city in knee-deep to waist deep water in the last two days, causing immense sufferings to its city dwellers.
Beginning in the last midnight, the rain came down hard and continued for several hours.
Forecasting officer of Khulna Met Office Amirul Azad said, 214 millimeters (mm) of rainfall in the city was recorded in 16 hours from Sunday morning to night till 10.30 pm on Sunday . It is the highest record in last 50 years.
Mongla port has been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3, he said.
Almost all the low lying area, residential houses, educational institutions, markets in Hotel Royal intersection, Shantidham intersection, Borobazar, Khanzahan Ali Hawkers Market, Moshiur Rahman Market, Miapara Market, Labonchara, Gallyamari, Rupsha, Natunbazar and Harintana, Khalishpur and Daulatpur areas in Khulna city have been affected by water logging, causing immense sufferings to the people.
Roads, lanes and bi-lanes in KDA Avenue, Royal and PTI intersection, Khanjahan Ali and some other low-lying areas in the city were inundated.
Owner of M/s Patwari Rice Store of Khulna alleged that at least 300 mound paddy worth around Tk 4.5 lakh were damaged which was kept at his mill.
Anisur Rahman Biswas, acting Mayor of KCC said, “We are trying our best to ersolve the water logging problem in the city.”
He, however, said water logging was created at Bandabazar area at Labonchara in the city as two businessmen Mahbub Brothers , proprietor of which is Sheikh Moznu, an industrialist and inhabitant of Daulatpur area in the city and Sing Mong Cement Factory constructed establishment after grabbing KCC land.
“The incessant rainfall created all these, but the situation worsened as the rain water did not remove due to obstacle created by the two businessmen,” he said.
“We have been working since morning everyday in the rainy season to clean the drains from getting clogged,” he added.
Local people of Daulatpur pabla area, 6 no. ward alleged that their councilor Sheikh Sawkat Ali filled drain by putting bags with a view to save his fish enclosures (ghers) and Banker Monir of Rashidmahal at Keshoblal road built a culvert in front of his residence. These two persons has been creating water logging at pabla area, local people also alleged. As they are influentials in the locality, nobody dares to say anything against them.
Visiting these areas, this correspondent witnessed rainwater flooding houses, kitchen markets, slums and the ground floors of most buildings and markets.Some people could not cook as rain water entered into their kitchens.
Almost all shops were closed and vehicles did not ply the streets while some few rickshaws and battery-run easy bikes were seen.
Barisal Correspondnet adds: More than 12-hour long monsoon downpour paralysed normal life in Barisal city on Sunday.
Local met office recorded amount of rain fall as 272 milimeters within last 12-hour till 6:00 Sunday, said Abdul Quddus, senior observer of the office.
Power , water supply and road communications have been disrupted in the town and water logging enforced citizens to stay inside homes.
Services of financial institutions became limited due to shortage of power supply.
In main commercial areas at Sadar Road and Chawak Bazar of the town logged water on the streets poured inside the shops and godowns damaging goods, said Delwar Hossain Rupak, owner of Book Villa.
Amzad Hossain and Tarikul Islam, executive engineers of Barisal division 1 and 2 of West Zone Power Distribution Company, said they forced to stop power supply to avoid accident as different grid and sub-stations of power supply in the city became marooned or went under water.
We started to resume power supply after rain stopped and logged water pumped out with the help of Fire Service from Sunday evening, the WZPDCO officials told.
