Bagerhat Correspondent :
About one kilometer road that connects Morrelganj Upazila with Sharankhola Upazila in Bagerhat district was suddenly eroded by the mighty river Panguchi recently. Not only that but also a number of road side dwelling houses were also eroded along with the homestead by the river. As a result, connection of Khwlia, Sanyasi, Baniakhali etc. villages of Morrelganj Upazia with Sharankhola Upazila was totally stopped and consequently, about two lakh people of those areas were thrown into utter distresses. For that reason people of those areas are to cross about 40 kilometers path more in stead of one kilometer to reach from one Upazila to another. One Abul Hashem (70), an inhabitant of the area disclosed to this correspondent that before the erosion of the road various heavy and light vehicles like buses, trucks, vans, and pickups used to ply on the road. At present the people of the area are forced to cross about 40 kilometers extra paths to reach their destinations. On the other hand, those people who are willing to reach Sanyasi (Morrelganj) stoppage by rocket steamer from Dhaka are also face the same sufferings to reach their destination and so is the case of those who are willing to go to Dhaka from Sanyasi stoppage by the steamer.
One Abdul Gafur Talukdar of village Gabtala under Morrelganj Upazila told this correspondent, the river Pancuchi has so far devoured a good number of dwelling houses, homesteads, cultivable lands, betel-nut gardens of the area during the last few years. Consequently, many people of the affected areas have become destitute and homeless and many were forced to leave their sweet homes for good. He added the erosion is gradually taking a serious turn. Md. Obaidur Rahman, UNO , Morrelganj disclosed to the newsmen, a portion of a local road that used to play an important role in the communication sector of both Morrelganj and Sharankhola Upazilas of Bagerhat was suddenly engulfed completely by the mighty river Panguchi a few days ago.
He added, considering the untold sufferings of the people of the area and the importance of the road the administration is thinking to construct an alternative road there very soon.
He further disclosed, we are talking with the Water Development Board to construct a durable embankment on the bank of the river Panguchi to check the area from the erosion.
