More Value Added Tax (VAT) collection is very important to make the country’s wheel functional instead of relying on foreign help, speakers at a day-long seminar here said Monday.
They viewed there is no alternative to accelerate the revenue collection from the internal resources to lessen the pressure on foreign aid.
Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate organized the seminar styled “Implementation of VAT and Supplementary Customs Law-2012 and Awareness building and Motivation among the taxpayers” held at Nanking Darbar in the city.
More than 500 taxpayers and other officials concerned attended the seminar.
Regional Commissioner of Customs, Excise and VAT Sunil Kumar Shaha and Divisional Officer Tapan Chandra Dey addressed the seminar as chief and special guests respectively.
Additional Commissioner Fakhrul Alam and President of Rajshahi Chambers of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman also spoke.
“Every one of us should feel about how to develop the nation and how to reduce the pressure on foreign aid,” said Commissioner Sunil Kumar Shaha.
He viewed that the enhanced revenue collection from the internal resources could be the effective means of reducing the dependence on foreign aid for executing the uplift programmes.
Sunil Shaha underscored the need for more awareness campaign among the general public especially the VAT payers regarding payment of VAT on easy process to make the VAT collection process successful.
Chamber President Muniruzzaman underscored the need for making more traders and businessmen habituated towards VAT payment as the present government is intended to execute the development programmes with the internal resources.
He attributed that the number of VAT payers are being increased gradually with addition of new more courageous payers, which is good sign for the nation.
He, however, said necessary measures should be taken to make the collection system easier together with freeing from harassment and bribe with introduction of automation system.
Importance should be given on creating mass awareness about more revenue collection in the greater interest of making the country economically self-reliance.
