A pool of newsmen on Monday observed that there should be more news on child issue on daily newspapers and television channels in line with a more sensitized media policy on children affairs.
Mentioning that currently media only spares three percent of its space on child reporting, newsmen said despite of willingness in highlighting many positive stories related to children affairs, it’s not possible always to do so due to market driven policy of media industry.
They also said that different aspects of children issues should be under media coverage rather only highlighting child abuse.
The observation was made at a focus group discussion on forming a network with journalists, working on children affairs, organized by bssinfotainment.net. The national news agency, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstah, BSS, initiated the portal to integrate all development stakeholders including its partners and service receivers at Jatiya Press Club here.
The bssinfotainment has taken the initiative to form a platform with journalists working on children issues in association with Centre for Services and Information on Disability (CSID) with the support of World Vision and AusAid.
BSS Special Correspondent Shahriar Shahid, Chief Reporter Madhusudan Mondol, Special Correspondent Ashequn Nabi Chowdhury, Senior Reporter Mahfazu Jesmine, World Vision National Advocacy Director Chandan Z Gomez, Project Manager Augustine Subash Purification and Executive Director of CSID Khandakar Zahrul Alam spoke at the inaugural session of the discussion.
A total of 20 journalists from national newspapers and television channels joined the discussion to give their opinions in forming a common platform for children affairs journalists while Management and Resource Development Initiative (MRDI) Adviser Shaheed Hossain moderated the discussion.
