Speakers at a seminar urged the government to give the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) ‘constitutional shape with more power for preventing corruption with strict hands.
The corruption could not be reduced for political influence, they said while speaking at the seminar titled ‘political unity and accountable administration is mainly associated to prevent corruption’ held in the ACC’s conference centre at Segunbagicha in the city on Tuesday.
It was the concluding ceremony of seven-day programme marking Anti-Prevention Week-2014. Dr Rawnok Jahan, Fellow of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), read out her essay on graft matter at the programme.
Presided at by ACC Chairman M Badiuzzaman, former Chief Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hena was delivering his speech as the chief guest.

In his speech, former CEC Abu Hena says, ” ACC is not a constitutional organisation though it was established as per law. Every constitutional organisation has a separate power from which the commission is deprived of. So, ACC should be given constitutional shape to strengthen it and remove doubt of people about its activities”.
“No organisation in the country can work impartially due to political influence. All the organisations have become helpless under the sway of political power”, he said, adding that the justice based society and impartial election cannot be confirmed yet because of politicians.
“If the morality and ethics do not lie in politicians, the corruption can never be reduced from the society”, Abu Hena said.
ACC Chairman M Badiuzzaman said, a survey showed that only eight per cent people have confidence in ACC. “There are reasons for their lack of confidence. Yet the commission is trying its best against corruption”.
Mozahidul Islam Selim said, the corruption has spread over the country such a way that none might be pulled back its speed.
Although the two major parties do not maintain unity among themselves, they are united on corruption practice, he said.
M Hafizuddin Ahmed said, the administration has been thoroughly partial and it cannot be stopped without transparency at the time of employing, transferring, promoting and other processes.
Barrister Amirul Islam said that there was nothing in the society pointing to justice.
Dr Badiul Alam Majumber says, we have raised questions over wealth amassing by some MPs and ministers. But it has been turned into defamation of character by the government.
AK Azad said the government protests if any newspaper or TV publishes or airs wrong reports but it never takes step on true news.
Anisul Haque said the politics is a good business now. For this reason, the black makers, corrupts and land grabbers have taken strong position in it.
