A Dhaka court on Thursday heard the further submission on behalf of the prosecution in the case filed over killing of 10 persons in the gruesome Ramna Batamul blasts on Pahela Baishak about 13 years back and fixed February 13 for submission of arguments on behalf of the defence.
Besides, the court rejected the bail of only accused Moulana Akbar Hossain alias Helaluddin, who was on bail of the High Court. Earlier, on February 3, a prosecution lawyer prayed for cancellation of the bail on the ground that the trial process is nearing the verdict.
If the accused is found guilty he will be awarded punishment, which may be death sentence also. Sensing anything like that the accused may be a fugitive anytime.
Besides, seven accused who are behind the bar, were produced to the court. They are: Arif Hasan Sumon, Shahadat Ullah alias Jewel, Hafez Moulana Abu Taher, Moulana Abdur Rouf, Moulana Sabbir alias Abdul Hannan Sabbir, Moulana Shawkot Osman alias Sheikh Farid and Hafez Moulana Yahia.
The five fugitives are: Moulana Mohammad Tajuddin, Hafez Jahangir Alam Badr, Moulana Abu Bakr alias Hafez Selim Hawlader, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman and Mufti Abdul Hai.
During the traditional celebration of Bangla New Year 1408 on April 14, 2001 at Ramna Batamul in the capital, a powerful bomb blast claimed lives of 10 people, leaving 50 others wounded.
Following the incident, two cases- one for murder and the other under the Explosive Substances Act were filed with Ramna Police Station.
Earlier, on November 29 in 2008, the charge sheets of the cases were submitted to the court against 14 accused including HUJI leader Mufti Abdul Hannan.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) pressed charges in both the cases against 14 leaders of the banned militant outfit HUJI on December 30 in 2008.
