Protection embankment of Monu River has been threatened as cracks have developed at Hasimpur area in Kulaura Upazila of Moulvibazar district due to sand extraction from the riverbed.
Locals vehicles are crossing the area at the risk .
Upazila administration and local sources said, for the Bangla year 1426, the district administration has leased out sand field of Manu River. Badrul Islam, a resident of Dakhinbazar area in same Upazila, took the lease at Tk 1, 20, 36000 .
The residents alleged that he is lifting sands from Kotarkona, Salon, Dhundalpur, Jalalpur, Hasimpur, Tukoli, Matabpur, Kotarkona Bridge and Manu rail bridge areas. The Katarkona road, bridge and Manu Railway Bridge have been threatened. The dam has become risky . About thousands people from different villages use this road over Monu River.
Due to excessive rainfall and hailstorms, the embankment will break if the water overflows in the river. In this situation, locals demanded steps to stop sand lifting.
While this correspondent visited the spot recently and found, the sand was being brought out by six extraction machines in Salon and Kotarkona area.
Kutub Uddin, a resident of Hasimpur area said my area’s embankment cracked on June 26 for unabated sand lifting. If there will heavy rains with hilly water, the embankment will be eroded . Local UP chairman visited the spot .
Abdul Bashit Bachhu, UP Chairman of Hazipur Union said, protection embankment cracked at around 50 feet for unabated sand lifting.
He said this embankment may collapse due to unabated sand lifting in the flood time.
However, on the condition of section-9 of sand lease, it has been said that sand cannot be taken from any place that destroys the bridges, roads and river dams.
Badrul Islam, leased holder claimed over phone he is lifting sand after agreeing to the conditions of the lease.
Sadi Ur Rahim Zadid, Assistant Commissioner (Land) in Kulaura of Moulvibazar said, In the past, the sand was being lifted from different points along Kotarkona road and on the right side of the Manu rail bridge. To avoid the risk, instructions were given to remove sand lifting from two spots.
