Rising crimes make city dwellers panicky

The city dwellers have been passing an insecure time as incidents of rape, killing, mugging and other sorts of crimes have increased marking deterioration in the law and order situation.
A total of 21 people were killed and 16 robberies committed under Dhaka city police stations in the month of April while the numbers of similar incidents were 20 and 21 respectively in March, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) sources.
Besides, a large number of crimes were also committed during the period which remained unrecorded, said some senior police officials.
A gang of unidentified muggers shot an official of a private company and snatched Tk33.27 lakh from him in the capital’s Moghbazar area on Sunday. Earlier on Saturday, a group of criminals killed the daughter of a house owner in the flat before stealing valuables in the capital’s Jatrabari area early in the morning.
In another incident, the robbers looted gold, cash and other valuables after strangulating a young woman in the city’s Dakkhinkhan area on Friday night.
Meanwhile, a young tribal girl working in the capital’s Jamuna Future Park was gang-raped in a moving microbus and thrown to a road in Uttara on Thursday night.
In the same night, another girl was raped by an Ansar member in the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). The criminal was identified as Bakul Sarkar, 26, hailing from Bogra district. A case has been filed in this connection, said Mamun Hossain, SI of Shahbagh thana.
At least four youths were hacked by unidentified miscreants in Bhatara area on Saturday night, said Nurul Mostakin, OC of the police station.
A five-member family was drugged and robbed of valuables from a house at Notunbazar in the capital’s Badda on May 18. The victims were identified as Sekander Ali, his wife Momena Begum, daughters Shilpi Akhter and Simi Akhter, son Abdul Mumin, said abdul Jali, OC of the police station.
A youth allegedly committed suicide after killing his wife at his apartment in the capital’s Hazaribagh on May 17. Victim Md Russel, 27, was hanging from a ceiling fan while his wife Sadia Akhter Iffat, 18, was lying dead in a bed, with her throat slit, said Rejaul Karim, Assistant Commissioner (Dhanmondi zone) of DMP.
At least 10 people, including the Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Prime Minister’s Political Affairs Adviser HT Imam and writer-cum-teacher Muhammad Zafar Iqbal have received letters that threatened to kill them. ‘Al- Qaeda(sic) – Ansarullah Bangla Team:13’ sent the letters containing a list of 10 high profile persons that were written in English through mail on Wednesday, said DU Proctor Dr. Mohammad Amzad Ali.
The others include Ganajagaran Mancha spokesman Imran H Sarker, Dhaka University teacher Kaberi Gayen, Jagannath Hall Provost Ashim Sarker and Awami League MP Tarana Halim. The others named in the letter are Bikash Saha, Iqbalur Rahim and Paltan Sutar. The letter said them that “Must you will prepare for dead”.
Earlier on May 13, a woman and her uncle-in-law were killed by unknown miscreants in the Eastern Housing area of the city’s Pallabi area, Mirpur. The victims were identified as Sweety Khatun, 24, wife of Zahid Hossain, an engineer of Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO), and Sweety’s maternal uncle-in-law Aminul Islam, 44, said Jasim Uddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Mirpur Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
DMP Additional Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Maruf Hasan said that police remain in alert about the criminal activities.
“The crimes virtually have increased but the law and order situation in the city is comparatively normal. We are trying to control the law and order situation,” the police official claimed.
