Month-long Victory Fair kicks off

A month-long 27th traditional Victory Fair began at MA Aziz Stadium premises in the city with basic objective to vent voice against militancy, fundamentalism and terrorism as well as to inform the new generation of the heroic tales of nine-month long bloody struggle of the country’s liberation war.
The founder of the fair and former mayor of Chittagong ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury formally inaugurated the fair by igniting the victory flame in presence of large number of freedom fighters and people of all walks of life.
Flanked by the Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Islam B.Sc., Chittagong City Mayor AZM Nasir Uddin, Vice-Chancellor of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University Prof Dr Mohit-ul-Alam, the victory flame was ignited amidst the slogan “Muktijuddher Bijoy Beer Bangalir Ohongkar (The victory of Liberation War is pride of the heroic Bengalis)”.
Speaking briefly on the occasion, the expatriate minister said the traditional victory fair has been playing a vital role in informing the youth folk of the prestigious history of the War of Liberation.
“The new generation could not be able to know about the fact if such victory fair was not arranged”, he said adding that the fair, which was first-ever organised in Chittagong, has now spread across the country.
Paying tributes to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he said none but Bangabandhu is the father of Bengali nationalism.
“If anybody proclaims independence standing on the road or before microphones, he cannot claim himself as the announcer of independence”, he added.
The minister said there is no other country in the world that had to shed such blood to achieve the independence.
Chairman of the Victory Fair Celebration Committee ABM Mohiuddin Chowdury, presided over the discussion meeting.
Valiant Freedom Fighters of the city had been organizing the fair since 1989 with basic objective to focus the supreme sacrifice made by the heroic sons of the soil for Independent Bangladesh, highlighting true history, culture and significance of the glorious war before the future generation.
Valiant freedom fighters will take part in the reminiscence meetings every day afternoon to recount fond memories of their heroic tales of the war on the Victory Dais permanently erected in the fair.
Country’s leading cultural groups will perform wide ranges of cultural functions including, folksongs, Nazrul and Tagore songs, staging of drama, dance, magic show, exhibition of documentary on liberation war and recitation.
Nearly 250 stalls and six pavilions have been set up to showcase various indigenous products in the fair.
