Bagerhat Correspondent :
Mongla Sea Port has turned into a loosing concern from a profitable one. The port earned a sum of Tk.540.14 crores as revenue during the last 5 fiscal years.
Out of that net profit is Tk.194.70 crores. The income of the port is increasing every year. The Port which was previously almost dead has once again become active due to competent management and good intension of the present Government.
It has now become viable economically. It was possible only when the present Govt. adopted a master plan for the over all development of the port under the Vision-2021 Project. It will be able to play an important role in the field of national economy of the country and its present picture will be totally changed if the master plan is translated into practice in the true sense of the term.
Source informed that when BNP-Jamat alliance formed the government in the year 2001 a conspiracy was hatched by the vested quatters to make the port inactive. At that time all the activities of the Port was almost stopped as a group of the users of the port made a deep conspiracy against the Port taking the opportunity of the carelessness of the then Govt. As a result, the arrival of ships at the port fell short abnormally for exporting and importing of goods. At that time it was found that the port was without any ship for days together. Consequently, the Port began to incur a heavy loss and it has turned into a loosing concern and its future became bleak.
During the period of the last caretaker Govt. the Port began to earn profit due to some timely steps adopted by the Govt. But the profit was not remarkable. In the year of 2009 when the present government came to power multifarious development projects including the dredging programme of the Pashur channel was taken and side by side competent and skilled persons were appointed at the key posts of the port in order to run its administration perfectly and smoothly.
