After long 68 years of its establishment Mongla Sea Port got an oil spill response and recovery vessel (a ship for recovery of the oil spilled on the river-water and wastages). The ship that was purchased at a cost of Tk.18 crors from Finland for the careful protection of the Pashur channel of the port reached Mongla Port on Tuesday. At that time Commodore AKM Faruk Hasan, Chairman of Mongla Port Authorities, Abdul Baten, Member (Operation) of the port and Commander Wali Ullah, Harbour Master of the port were present at the jetty. The Chairman of the port told the newsmen, the Pashur channel of the port is flowing through Sundarbans. The incident of sinking of an oil tanker in the river Shela on December 9, 2014 was strongly excited the world. After that incident the port authorities decided to purchase such a vessel. The vessel that was purchased with the own fund of the port was named as Pashur chnnel-1.
He added, if in future any shipwreck incident take place in the Pashur channel or in Sundarbans this newly purchased vessel will be able to protect the disaster of the environment. Not only that but also it will be able to recover the spilled oil or wastages even from the small canals of Sundrbans. But the Pashur channel is one of the longest and the biggest channels of the world. So, the Port authorities are thinking to purchase 3/4 more such sweeper ships in future.
Hossain Mohammad, proprietor of Nuru & Sons, one of the users of the port told, a number of ships of both Bangladesh and foreign countries are to cross Sundarbans regularly to reach Mongla port. This new ship will be able to remover flowed down fuel oil and wastages from the Pashur channel and the forest (Sundarbans).
He added, on December 9 in the year 2014 an oil tanker named OT Southern Star-7 laden with 3 lakh 57 thousand 6 hundred 64 liters of fuel oil sank in the river Shela of Sundrbas after it collided with another ship. But for want any salvaging ship and oil sweeper ship oil spread all over Sundarbans, Pashur channel and the Bay of Bengal and damaged the bio-diversity of the forest and the Bay. It was strongly criticized by the environmentalists in the country and the out sides. After long 20 days of the incident such a vessel was brought from Singapore for the recovery of the spilled fuel oil. Since then the environmentalists and the users of the port strongly urged the port authorities to manage such a sweeper ship.
