The name of Mongla-Ghasiakhli international water route was changed and it was renamed as Bangbandhu Mongla-Ghasiakhali (BMG) canal in remembrance of the father of the nation, according to a general notification issued by Aminur Rahman, Deputy Secretary of the ministry of Water Transport.
It is stated in the notification that this canal is well known as an international water protocol route. When the father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibor Rahman was in charge of the ministry of Water Transport he excavated Mongla-Ghasiakhali water route after considering the importance in the context of the country. But for want of navigability the movement of all kinds of water vessels in the canal was stopped during the period from the year 2010 to 2015. After realizing the importance of the canal in order to make active Mongla, the 2nd Sea Port of the country Premier Sheikh Hasina ordered the concerned department to re-excavate the canal through capital dredging and it was completed within a year and the premier inaugurated the canal ceremonially on October 27, 2016 through video conference. On the occasion of the centenary birth year of Bangbandhu Sheikh Mujibor Rahman the name of the canal which was deeply associated with the memory of the Father of the Nation was changed as Bangabandhu Mongla-Ghasiakhali (BMG) canal.
