Bagerhat Correspondent :
The name of Mongla Customs House is ‘Mongla Shulka Bhaban’ but it is not situated at Mongla.
The Bhaaban was established on the basis of the activities of Mongla Sea Port but it is still located at Khalishpur industrial area in Khulna City Corporation, about 35 kilometers away from Mongla Port.
As a result, the businessmen who are using the port are suffering a lot of inconveniences. At last an attempt has already been taken to shift the Customs House from Khalishpur to Mongla Port in order to give more facilities to the users of the port, it is learnt from a reliable source. Mongla customs house will be constructed in front of the administration building of the Mongla Port Authorities
The present Government has taken various appreciable steps to make the port a developed one and more viable. As its continuity an order was issued by the authorities to shift all the customs-concerned activities of the port to Mongla from Khulna in order to make ease the professional activities of the businessmen. But due to the hostile attitude of a minor section of people the order could not materialized so far. Only an Assistant Commissioner of Customs and his 2/3 assistants were posted to Mongla Port in order to release the imported reconditioned cars and they were discharging their office duties in 2/3 hired rooms of a building of the port authorities. With the increase of arrival and departure of ships at the port the volumes of the works of the customs department also increased. After the construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge the arrival and departure of ships at Mongla Port will be increased to a great extent. Then the Customs House of the port should be opened for all times in order to facilitate the loading and unloading works of goods like the Port of Chittagong.
Considering all those things steps were taken on an emergency basis to construct Mongla Customs House at Mongla, it was disclosed to the newsmen by Customs Commissioner Dr. Al-Amin Pramanik.
A project of Tk.52.20 cr. was already taken by the authorities concerned with a view to constructing a Customs Office and its all infrastructures at Mongla Port.
