Dr AK Abdul Momen is an Awami League lawmaker, but he is not a member of the ruling party’s central committee, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has said.
Dr Hasan Mahmud, who is also a joint general secretary of the Awami League, was speaking to reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Sunday, reports Dhaka Tribune.
Foreign Minister Momen has been making the headlines for some of his controversial comments. He recently said he had requested India to help keep Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party in power.
Awami League Presidium Member Abdur Rahman on Saturday said the party would not take responsibility for Momen’s comment as he was not its member.
When asked about the matter, Hasan said Momen was indeed a member of the party, but not a part of its central leadership. “As he is not a member of the central committee, he has of course not been tasked to address matters abroad on behalf of the party. He (Abdur Rahman) is right in that regard.”
Those holding high offices should always remain cautious while making any statement, the minister said. “I myself stay very careful while speaking.”
The foreign minister maintains that his comments were taken out of context and distorted by the media.
